Buckwheat Cereal

As misleading as the name sounds, buckwheat is actually a gluten free grain – and great for a warm breakfast meal. This is a great alternative to oatmeal and is packed with fiber and protein.

Basic Buckwheat Breakfast Cereal Recipe
Gluten Free Buckwheat Cereal with Bananas
Ingredients (per serving)
¼ cup buckwheat
¾ cup water
Dash of salt

Place ingredients in a small pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cover tightly with a lid, cooking for 5-10 minutes or until liquid is mostly absorbed.

Time-saving method: In a microwave safe bowl, mix ¼ cup cereal, ¾ cup water. Cover and heat for 3 minutes. Let stand for 2 minutes.

Well that’s easy enough! But, it is quite bland, so I like to try these different variations to boost the flavor.

Variations:
Blueberry Buckwheat Cereal
  • I almost always top with cinnamon and a squirt of honey or 100% maple syrup.
  • Try adding the fruit of your choice, like sliced bananas, blueberries, thinly sliced apples, or raisins. I like adding the fruit while it simmers so the flavor spreads across the meal.
  • Sprinkle chopped walnuts, almond slivers, or pecans on top for a little crunch and extra protein.
  • Stir in a little bit of milk for flavor and calcium. (The other day I added a dash of homemade chocolate almond milk).
  • Oh yeah…and being the chocolate addict I am, I have even added a spoon of unsweetened cocoa to make chocolate buckwheat!
  • Ginger is good to add too on those cold mornings when you really need some internal heat.

Really, you could try anything you want…if Brian were to make his own he would probably have every ingredient on the planet in it like he does with his oatmeal.  Just have fun with it…it will start your day out on the right step!
