Do what you say and say what you mean
"Healing Diets II is coming close. Time to prepare with a light pure vegan diet and say goodbye to sugar, caffeine, alcohol, meat, eggs, fish, dairy and personal habits."
AHHHH! Just got this email in preparation for my healing diets course on February 25th...which means I'm in big trouble. It is so much easier to tell people to do stuff than it is to do it yourself. While I consider myself to live a healthier lifestyle than many people, I have a long way to go till I can say I live a completely healthy lifestyle.
Problem areas for me:
Sugar - aka CHOCOLATE- I literally can't go a day, no not even a few hours, without a bite of chocolate. I have your textbook definition addiction. I get anxious, tense and uncomfortable when I can't have it, I can't focus on other things until I get some, I will go to great lengths to make sure I have it available, and it gives me the happiest sensation in the world when I have a bite. I will fail at this one.
Caffeine - No problem other than the chocolate thing. Coffee gives me the jitters and a stomach ache - it's my bodies way of saying "you are too annoyingly hyper anyway".
Alcohol - I am by no means addicted to alcohol, but socially this presents a challenge. Especially with Brian and I trying to meet people. It is so much easier to grab a drink with someone you don't know than it would be to awkwardly come up with topics of conversation at your house with nothing in hand. Alcohol makes people relaxed, reduces judgments (in a good way by opening people up to new ideas and people), it makes you happy, and talkative. Also, it is far more common for people to introduce themselves and start a conversation when a little booze juice is involved. Plus, I just bought a box of wine for the house - luckily those things keep the wine fresh for a month.
Meat - Vegetarianism is not my choice way of life, but because I have to do this anyway when feeding Brian, this part should be easy.
Eggs and Fish - What the heck? Well now how are we going to get our protein??
Dairy - Ha, this one just makes me laugh. The idea of eating meals that don't include cheese is just preposterous. I think she had to be joking on this one.
This is going to take a lot of thought. I'll try to do it this week...but by no means do I expect to do this long term. I see a lot of value in a lot of the so called no-no foods. Seriously, chocolate works like a baby's pacifier to me - instant happiness. Plus, eggs, fish and dairy have important nutrients. I think these foods, in moderation, are key ingredients to healthy living. Not to mention practicality and taste.
So you all can look forward to a week of vegan, sugarless, boozeless recipes. We'll see how it goes, but for a long term plan I think I am going to do what I say and say what I mean, and what I mean to say is I heart chocolate, cheese, meat, and wine.
