Happy Valentine's Day

To you and to all those people who make me feel so happy and lucky to be me!
I would like to preface this post with a quote from Brian himself, spoken last night, "Do you want to walk to the store with me after I get home from work and running, and you can pick up some flowers for yourself?"
Right before giving my usual Joe Versus the Volcano quote, "I have no response to that," which comes up a lot when living with Brian, I said, "There were lots of flowers we walked by at Sprouts today."
To that Brian honestly and exasperatingly questions, "Well why didn't you get some?"

So needless to say, our relationship is not filled with much romance, so I'm really not in a position to share cutesy heart-shaped cupcake recipes or candlelit dinner stages. Instead, I will be making Brian his favorite tonight: Swordfish, grilled onions, bread and cheese as the French do, and a spinach salad. I should have gotten him a sweet potato, but I forgot to pick one up so I may just roast some red potatoes I have in the house. And since Brian won't eat sugar, yogurt and blueberries it is for dessert. Maybe I'll be extra nice and form the berries in the shape of a heart...but probably not.

I think that is what is important on days like this - showing someone you care. Not a big hoopla of roses and chocolates and $150 dinners. Just making sure you tell the people you love, that you love them and that you appreciate all of the kind, supportive things they have done for you. You can say so in person, on the phone, in a text, on facebook, or in an old fashioned mailed card. Just make sure they know it, and make sure you show it with the things you do and the way you treat them.  Don't worry about whether you have a date or whether or not your spouse got you a fancy gift. Just make sure that you are sharing your love and appreciation with those people in your life that have shared it with you. You never know what an impact you have on another person's life with a simple, thank you or I love you.

As the good ole' Beatles said after years of loving the world with the gift of music, "And, in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."
