Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Get Back Into The Water
I recently heard a pro dolphin captivity argument comparing the captive dolphin industry in Mexico to the tobacco and alcohol industry in which a lady posted on Facebook that:
Now although the grammar is somewhat questionable the logic is undeniable that the dolphin entertainment industry is extremely similar to the alcohol and tobacco industry. In fact they all share a common trait that these businesses have been trying to hide the truth and hidden dangers about their products for years.
Now just as the tobacco industry hired lobbyists, PR firms, and at one point even physicians to assert that their products were safe and not at all dangerous nor damaging to the health of consumers, the captive dolphin industry has followed suit in the form of AMMPA (Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums)
What Is AMMPA?
This is a good question, in fact AMMPA is the same international association that certified Sea World Orlando as safe and still lists the marine park as a member even after the fact that the now infamous bull killer whale Tilikum killed three people including two trainers and a member of the public. But don´t worry its a safe facility in the view of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums!!SeaWorld still remains an accredited member even though their own corporate record lists over 100 acts of aggression by Orcas, yet AMMPA still certify SeaWorld as safe and run in-accordance with AMMPA guidelines. They even go one step further by stating that:
Well interestingly enough just a couple of months ago a tourist was attacked and rammed by a dolphin in Cozumel, Mexico. Also AMMAP seem to have forgotten about the 3 dolphins that died within one week at Discovery Cove in July of 2009, the dolphin that died after colliding with another dolphin at Sea World Florida, and the two incidents of young children being bitten by frustrated dolphins, the list goes on and on. You can even check out the video below of a woman being rammed violently by a dolphin in another AMMPA approved facility (Dolphin Explorer) in Punta Cana Dominican Republic:
For A Few Dollars More...
The AMMPA website is in serious need of updating, and it appears that they will authenticate absolutely anyone as an accredited AMMPA member who has a swimming pool, some dolphins and a few dollars to spare. The accreditation guidelines are painfully arbitrary for example “Parks must be equipped with adequately sized areas for the animals”… What is adequate and who decided exactly how big of an area is adequate for a mammal that swims 50 miles a day and dives to depths of 600 meters in the wild. The guidelines are not only painfully arbitrary but blatantly inaccurate:Just because dolphin facilities don´t report accidents, attacks, or disease transmission between humans and dolphins doesn´t mean it doesn´t happen just read the Health Risk For Marine Mammals Workers.
Dolphin Discovery state openly on their official blog that “We have120 dolphins in our care, more than 50 of which were born through our successful reproduction program”, so where did the other 70 dolphins come from? Strangely enough AMMPA doesn’t not support removing cetaceans from their natural environment but certify Dolphin Discovery as a company that meets their criteria?
Dolphinariums in Mexico like Delphinus World and Dolphinarus plaster the AMMPA certifications across their websites, even though the AMMPA seal of approval is as much cause for celebration as receiving a free toy with your happy meal in Mcdonald´s. Who knows maybe if happy meals rammed tourists, bit children, and drowned dolphin trainers they would receive an AMMPA certification of excellence also.
