Saltine Cracker Candy {Christmas Crack}

Updated Post: I wanted to add a update to my Saltine Toffee Candy. Ever since Christmas I have been experimenting with this recipe just a bit. There isn't anything wrong with the original one, but I was wanting to try and come up with a less chocolate version.

I think I came up with the perfect combination, so I wanted to make sure to come back and share it with everyone. I'm not sure which version I like better, the full chocolate or the toffee heath version. All I know is I'm so glad that now I have two versions of this yummy recipe.

The second version is almost exact to the original recipe below with one change. Instead of using chocolate chips and chopped pecans I omitted both and just used Milk Chocolate Toffee Bits.

I found them in the baking isle at Walmart. I really love this new version. I have included a few step by step photos above so you could see how I substituted with the milk chocolate toffee bit.

The second version is still prepared the same way as the original recipe (recipe below) except I just left out the chocolate part and substituted with heath toffee bits. With this version you don't have to return the cracker candy back to the oven to melt. Just leave it like it is and refrigerate for two hours.

When finished break into pieces and store in a air tight container. I usually store mine in the freezer until I want to use them for gift giving and such. In this case I have them put aside for Valentine Teacher Treats. I hope you will give the second version a try because it ROCKS!!!

Cook's Note: Graham Crackers can be used in place of saltines.

My holiday cookie and candy tray just wouldn't be the same without a yummy batch of Saltine Cracker Candy {chocolate version}. This recipe isn't anything new and lately I have seen this toffee popping up on blogs all over the place.

But for anyone who has never tried saltine toffee candy, this post is for you. I love the sweetness of the brown sugar mixed with the saltiness of the saltine crackers and topped with melted chocolate. Um it really is the perfect combination.

I call this candy Christmas Crack because it's so addicting. One year I couldn't get enough of this stuff that I kept making batch after batch just eating and giving it away to friends.

Anyone who tries this toffee candy always asks me for the recipe. To me it taste almost exact to Almond Roca. So if you are an Almond Roca fan you have to try this recipe even if it is just out of curiosity.

If you have a fear of making candy this recipe will change your mind. It's so easy that my daughter helped with most of recipe. So if she can do it then I have faith in you.  Another great thing is all the ingredients called for are ones that you usually have on hand in your pantry! That's always a plus.

Why don't you give this candy recipe a try and surprise a loved one or friend with a homemade batch of toffee candy. I have included some step by step photos of how to make this yummy candy.   In usual fashion the full recipe is at the end of this post.
Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil that has been sprayed with a bit of non stick spray. Lay crackers out on your baking sheet in one layer. In a medium sized saucepan melt the butter and the brown sugar. Stir often and bring to a full rolling boil. After the mixture comes to a full rolling boil set your timer and boil the mixture for exactly 3 minutes.

Pour over the saltines andbake for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips. Wait until they are almost melted then spread evenly all over all the saltines. Sprinkle on the nuts as evenly as possible. Refrigerate for two hours and then break up into pieces and store in a air tight container.

Mackenzie had such a fun time adding all the chocolate chips and the nuts. I have to admit my kids are awesome helpers in the kitchen. I'm such a lucky mommy.

Add the toffee to clear gift sacks and tie on a holiday ribbon and gift tag. You can also add the toffee to a holiday tin with pretty tissue paper. I apologize ahead of time for your new addiction. Once you get your first taste I know you will be hooked.
